June 2025
Stylistic Changes
We have updated the typography, colours, and design of certain elements of the web version of Studydrive.
AI Chatbot Improvements
Backend:
- The AI service powering the chatbot is now OpenAI (ChatGPT).
- The responses are now faster, more accurate, and on point.
- The memory of the AI is much better optimized:
- It can remember the previous questions within a conversation and can do proper follow-up.
- There is now a much larger per-minute quota:
- It can now support 500x more concurrent interactions.
Frontend (Web Version):
- The AI Chatbot now supports Common Markdown format:
- It responds with font styles, bullet points, paragraphs, tables, and code blocks.
- The pre-defined prompts are now dynamic and can be configured per user study profile.
This update changes nothing for existing user conversations.
May 2025
PDF Viewer
Our new PDF viewer loads significantly faster than the older version, meaning improved wait times (only a few seconds!) and a much smoother user experience.
Clean Up & Maintenance
Search results no longer include school documents when no documents are found for the selected university. This is to ensure targeted search results, assuming that you are a university student and have no interest in documentation from school.
Additionally, course names are now altered and trimmed automatically to remove extra spaces if they contain such.
Download Improvements
The button to download a document is now in the sticky part of the document view, so it's accessible at any scroll depth. You no longer have to scroll to the top to download! We’ve also added a 'Processing download' indicator so users know the download is in progress.
April 2025
Frictionless Commenting
Based on user feedback, we have now enabled comments on a document without needing to join the course in which the document has been listed.
Special Characters Allowance
Special characters are now handled differently, and will no longer be altered or removed. This means that math or programming students can easily share math equations or code in an easy and obstacle-free manner.
A Curated NewsFeed
Exited courses and groups will no longer be part of the feed history, excepting posts or documents that users have directly commented on.
AI Chatbot Test Release
Premium users from IU Hochschule with Law majors can now access and use our AI chatbot!
The chatbot is designed to help students with study-related questions, such as: “What is break-even analysis?” At this stage, the chatbot is focused purely on academic support as its primary function. We're working on further development and infrastructure options that will support our ability to scale and release the chatbot to all users.
February 2025
New Fixes
If there are very few or no results for your university of registration, the search will now also display alternative results from other universities.
Document Downloads
Document downloads are now possible for document owners regardless of whether they are a Premium user or not. Simply put, you can download any document you've uploaded onto Studydrive at any point in time.
Updated Document Sorting
We have added a new filter called 'Popularity', that takes into account the number of ratings a document has received as the primary measure for precedence.
January 2025
New Colours
We updated our UI with a new colour schema across web, Android, and iOS. More fun, anyone?!
The Search keeps getting Better
If you search for a document within a discipline that does not exist in the Studydrive knowledge base, we now show you recommended reading for related subjects. You may not get exactly what you were looking for, but some extra context is never a bad thing!
November 2024
Improved Search
Search widget in the dashboard: The search is now easier, quicker to access. By adding the search to the home dashboard, we ensure that the search is the first thing new users will see after signing up.
Updated empty newsfeed screen: When new users navigate to the Newsfeed post sign-up, we now direct them to the "add courses" screen. They can then join and add courses of interest, and thereby populate their newsfeed with relevant updates.
Smoother Onboarding
What?
We have released a small but hopefully impactful change for users who register from within a Studydrive document page. In the past, these users would see the document page again after registration, which meant they were never properly onboarded, never saw the first steps, other quests or any announcements. We are now redirecting these users to the dashboard post-registration. The document they started on is still easily accessible through the "Continue Reading" widget of the dashboard.
Why did we do it?
This change is primarily to allow for a smoother onboarding process, across all sources of registration. With this, we hope to make new users more aware of the possibilities within Studydrive.
Download Rules
Users can now download up to 50 documents per day or 100 per month on a Premium subscription.
Sail through Studydrive
Study Lists Filter: Users can now find specific documents in their Study Lists more easily with new filter options.
Flashcard Creation Redesign: Creating flashcards is now smoother with the improved design.
All Quests Visible: All quests are now displayed, helping you stay on top of the latest challenges.
September 2024
Uploading just got a little easier!
Uploading documents to Studydrive is now much easier.
What has changed?
We have introduced a new design for the upload page that offers an improved UX & UI, along with the feature of multi-course uploading!
Why did we do it?
The upload page is a core element of our platform. We received important feedback regarding functionality, prompting us to make improvements. We believe the new upload page will make the upload process friction-less from the user PoV.
Ace your exams with AI-generated summaries and flashcards!
What does this mean?
Premium users can now generate AI-powered summaries and flashcards with just one click on their favourite documents!
Why did we do this?
In a rush but need the cliffnotes version of a lengthy summary? That is exactly what this feature does. Saves you time, but gives you the scoop. We'll continue to optimize the UX of the summaries and flashcards, along with some exciting AI features that are coming soon!
July 2024
Studydrive Quests
We get it, earning credits can sometimes be a bit confusing. We want credits to be super easy for you to understand, so you know when you earn them and where they come from! That's why we've launched a new overview in which you can collect your earned credits directly and actually see where these credits are coming from so that you know exactly what to do to earn new credits. Say hello to our Quests overview!
Where can I find the quests?
You can find the quests on your Studydrive dashboard.
What quests do we have?
At the moment, we only have the quests for actions for which we offered credits already. If these are well received, we will also work on further quests.
Is it harder to earn credits now?
No, the amount of credits you receive at the end is the same.
March 2024
Studydrive goes high school
Studydrive is no longer only for university students, now high school pupils can also reap the benefits! When registering, simply enter your school and grade and get access to transcripts from your classmates and other pupils.
What will change for university students?
Absolutely nothing, as a student you can continue to use the platform as usual.
As a university student, how can I upload my old school documents?
As always, simply use the upload button, select "Upload high school documents" and enter your school, subject and class. You will of course receive credits for each upload and download as usual.
Do I also get credits if I invite pupils to Studydrive?
Of course. The type of account is not important when it comes to referrals.
November 2023
Document ratings!
You can now rate all documents on Studydrive by giving them between 1 and 5 stars for an easier overview of which documents have helped other students the most. You can find the average rating of a document in the top bar of the document in the Studydrive web version and on the lower right in the app. To give your own rating, simply click on the star symbol.
Btw: if you see a document which violates our terms and conditions you can report it by clicking on the three dots.
October 2023
Premium with Credits
It is now possible to purchase Studydrive Premium with the Credits generated on Studydrive. Premium allows you to enjoy Studydrive ad-free, download documents and post anonymously on Studydrive. You can get all that by actively contributing to Studydrive.
As a special early contributor offer you will get a 50% discount on Premium, if purchased with Credits. This means:
- 1 month Premium: 1000 Credits
- 6 months Premium: 3000 Credits
- 12 months Premium: 4800 Credits
How to get Credits
You get Credits for every document you upload (this is new), getting downloads/views on your documents and by inviting other students to Studydrive.
Here’s what each specific action gets you:
- For your first document upload – 600 Credits
- Every other upload – 100 Credits
- Each Download – 2 Credits
- Inviting friends – 50 Credits
You also continue to receive Credits for the creation of your first flashcard set and for every time someone studies with your flashcards. The amount there remains the same as before.
We decided to give Credits to every upload because all your document contributions matter. By doing so we can also ensure that students in smaller courses and/or universities have the chance of collecting a decent number of Credits – regardless of their download numbers. The usual rules for uploading documents apply. Documents that don’t follow our guidelines will be deleted and the respective Credits removed. Should you see a document that doesn’t apply to our guidelines, please report it.
Fastest way to get Premium with Credits
Sooo, if you haven’t uploaded anything yet, all you need to do is upload 5 documents and you already have enough Credits to purchase the 1-month subscription plan!!
If you have already uploaded documents, but don’t have enough Credits for purchase yet, you can continue uploading and/or try to increase the downloads, e.g. by sharing the documents on relevant Whatsapp groups etc. Don’t underestimate how easily downloads can add up. And don’t forget: the better the quality of your documents, the more downloads you get.
Have fun collecting more Credits and purchasing Studydrive Premium with them!
September 2023
Study Lists
This new feature lets you organize your documents and mark them as completed. You will thus have easier access to all the documents you need, as you don’t need to go through the individual courses anymore to find them. You will also have a better overview of which ones you still need to revise and which ones you are done studying with. For an overall smoother exam preparation and study experience.
You can find your Study Lists on Studydrive on the left bar in your browser. Keep an eye out for the Study Lists icon! The feature will also be available in the app soon.
Add documents
To add a document to Study Lists, click on the Study Lists icon when you’re viewing a document. The icon is located on the top right corner when using the web version and on the bottom right when in the app. The document is then added to your Study Lists under the respective course name. When you no longer need the document, you can mark it as “Completed”, which will automatically move the document to the bottom of the list. You can add documents from any student to Study Lists. This of course includes your own documents. And you can add as many documents as you like.
Remove documents
To remove documents from your Study Lists, simply open the document and unclick the Study Lists icon again.
Your Study Lists are only visible for you btw, as they are there to serve your individual organization and study purposes.
Check out Study Lists here and start adding all your documents!

July 2023
Chat Function
A long-awaited feature! You can now chat privately with other Studydrive users. Open a profile and click the chat icon. Available on both app and web (make sure your app is updated).
Set preferences: disable chat entirely or allow chats only from users who joined at least 30 days ago. You can block/unblock users and delete messages (they disappear for both sides). Media sending is not yet supported.
Removal of Anonymity for Posts
Important: It’s no longer possible to post anonymously in groups, courses, or documents (uploading anonymously is still allowed).
Why? This change improves community connections and enables profile-based chatting. It also helps prevent abuse and strengthens moderation.
Want more privacy? Use a pseudonym by changing your username here.
AI-extended Content
We’re launching a new feature: selected documents are now enhanced with AI-generated content and marked with a yellow “AI extended” label.
- Summary – highlights key points of the document
- Flashcards – help you learn and retain content better
This aims to save time and help you study more effectively. These enhancements are currently limited to select popular documents on the platform and are only available in the web version.
Please note: AI content may not always be accurate. We encourage you to fact-check and use the built-in feedback option to help improve the feature.
Good news for document creators: if someone studies with the AI-extended content of your uploaded documents, it still counts as a download for you. So no downloads are lost—only gained!
See an example of the feature in action here. Or check if your favorite document is included here.
