What is a public university?
In Germany, public universities (or staatliche Universitäten) is the core focus of the higher education sustem. They are funded and administered by the federal states (Länder), ensuring high academic standards and easy accessibility across the country.
Public universities have a strong orientation towards research. They typically enroll very large numbers of students and cover a huge range of disciplines. All degree programs must undergo rigorous external accreditation by the German Accreditation Council (Akkreditierungsrat) to ensure the quality and recognition of their qualifications, regardless of private funding.
