What's behind Pride Month
The rainbow flag is raised! Parades, rallies and events of various kinds take place around the world to mark Pride Month. The english term "Pride" symbolises the courage queer people should have to stand up for their identity. Tolerance, self-confidence and inclusion are central motifs of the movement around Pride Month. Diversity is celebrated and highlighted as a sign against discrimination and exclusion!
Pride Month commemorates the riots in June 1969: gay and trans people clashed violently with New York police officers. The reason for this was a raid on the gay bar 'Stonewall Inn', where the visitors gathered after the funeral of a gay idol. The Stonewall Riots were a central trigger for worldwide movements of the gay and lesbian (LGBT) communities.
