Deutschlandticket vs Semesterticket: Which one should you choose?

As an university student in Germany, you will be using the public transport a lot. Public transport in Germany is affordable and easily accessible and usually covers all modes of transports regionally and nationally. This includes the U-bahn, S-bahn, bus, tram, and in some cases the Regiobahn or RB.
Public transport was covered for students in university via the Semesterticket: a one-time ticket to be purchased every six months or the span of a single semester. But since the introduction of the Deutschlandticket (D-Ticket) and its student variant, the Deutschland Semester Ticket (DST), the situation has changed a little. Where the Semesterticket only covered public transportation on a state-wide level, the Deutschlandticket and the DST can be also used in out-of-state cities and towns.
The Deutschland Semester Ticket (DST)
The Deutschland Semester Ticket, often simply called the discounted D-Ticket for students, is the successor to the traditional Semesterticket in most German federal states. The subsidized cost is possible due to the principle of solidarity: almost all students at a participating university automatically pay the fee along with their semester fees, which is what makes the low price possible.
Key Facts:
- Price: It is fixed at 60% of the regular Deutschlandticket price.
- Note: Since the regular D-Ticket has risen to €58, the price of the DST (as of Winter Semester 2025/26) is between €29.40 - €39.80 per month (approx. €208.80 per semester).
- Area of Validity: It is valid nationwide on all local and regional transport, like the regular D-Ticket.
- Acquisition: You can purchase the DST using the DeutscheBahn app.
The Deutschland Ticket (Regular)
The regular Deutschlandticket (D-Ticket) at full price is available to all citizens. This is the option for you if your university does not offer a solidarity-financed Deutschland Semester Ticket, or if you require maximum flexibility in your subscription.
Key Facts:
- Price: It currently costs €58.00 per month (as of Winter 2025/2026). This price is set to increase to €63.00 starting January 1st, 2026.
- Area of Validity: Valid nationwide on all local and regional transport.
- Subscription Flexibility: It is purchased as a monthly subscription and can be cancelled monthly. You can also choose to pause the subscription when you do not need it.
- Additional Services: Some private providers link the regular D-Ticket to additional services, such as free minutes for sharing services (e-scooters, e-bikes).

Conclusion
For actively enrolled students in university, the Deutschland Semester Ticket (DST) is the clear winner. It is significantly cheaper (around 23 EUR less per month). Since the fee is automatically included in your semester contribution, it will give you 6 months of seamless access to national travel: without the added hassle of renewal.
However, the regular D-Ticket may be necessary for specific situations. If you are taking a leave of absence (Urlaubssemester) and are therefore exempted from paying the solidarity fee. Additionally, let’s say you need transport coverage for a short period between graduation and employment. In that situation, the regular D-Ticket would be a better option given that you can cancel it on a monthly basis and need not get locked into a six-month long commitment.
