How long can you ask for time to think about a job offer?
Imagine the following scenario: You receive more than one acceptance letter for all the applications you sent out simultaneously. This is no surprise, given the increasing number of unfilled positions in Germany. Specialists are desperately needed these days. However, your dream company hasn't contacted you yet, and you don't want to rush into anything.
Having a choice puts you at an advantage. However, if you wait too long to accept a job, you risk losing the opportunity. So, how do you best communicate that you need more time to consider the position without alienating recruiters? Here are six tips for you.
Make a schedule
Let's start one step ahead. To avoid having to buy extra time to think things through, our HR expert Gala recommends creating a schedule in advance and communicating important deadlines in every interview. "Stay on top of things from the beginning, be up to date! Ask directly after the interview when you can expect a response," explains Gala.
Thank & Hold Off
After receiving your acceptance letter, you are generally entitled to two to three days to consider your application. This period is usually communicated to you directly upon acceptance with a statement like "We expect your response by December 1, 2021." You must get back to them within this period, even if you don't give them a final confirmation. Don't respond immediately to calls and emails. For example, use "urgent personal matters" as a reason for postponing. Don't let yourself be pressured and try to keep all the cards in your hand.
Ask questions about the contract
You can delay the process by asking further questions about the contract. While this approach isn't the best way to do things, it gives you more time: What non-monetary benefits can I expect? Is there a budget for continuing education? This approach is particularly suitable if no deadline is set.
Accelerate other Processes
Try to accelerate the process at other companies yourself: Ask your desired company about the current status of your application. Let them know that they're your favorite, but that you're currently under pressure.
Be honest!
Be honest! HR professionals know how application processes work and will be understanding of your dilemma. Our HR expert Gala reveals: "During the application phase, you're throwing a lot of balls in the air, which you then try to juggle. It's perfectly legitimate to say, Hey, I'm still in other processes." Ideally, HR professionals will jump-start the process for you or give you more time to think things through.
Choose your words carefully
It's important that you remain polite and choose the right wording, no matter what approach you take. Avoid threatening or accusatory statements. Express your interest and continue to make a good impression. Perhaps your gut feeling has already told you which response is worth waiting for! Gala also advises: "Do some soul searching. When under pressure, ask yourself who you'd rather work for!"
