Higher education in Austria
In Austria, there are 3 primary categories for higher education institutes - Universities, Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen), and private Universities. The first two are usually owned by the state, with some exceptions.
1. Universities (Universitäten): Traditional public universities in Austria offer 3 and 4 year Bachelors and Masters degree programs encompassing a broad range of subjects such as STEM, arts, and medicine. These universities receive public funding and are also home to excellent research facilities, doctoral & post-doctoral programs.
2. Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen): The focus is more on practical education and learning, generally designed for a key area of focus. Students receive training for particular professions such as engineering, health and nursing, and social sciences. Examples include FH Salzburg, FH Campus Wien, and MCI Management Center Innsbruck.
3. Private Universities (Privatuniversitäten): Privately funded institutions occupy a smaller share of the higher education landscape in Austria and in other German-speaking countries such as Germany and Switzerland. Private universities are sought after by students who already have a few years of work experience and are pursuing programs tailored to industry backgrounds. A good example is a MBA.
The total number of students in higher education programs in Austria in 2023 was at 400340, recording a 1.8% jump since 2022. About a fourth are international students with the latest recorded number being 106000.
