Lateralization:

_ = (primary auditory cortex bigger at the right side for music)

_ = (Wernicke's area: secondary auditory cortex) for language at the bigger at the left side

Lateralization:

Herschl' gyrus = (primary auditory cortex bigger at the right side for music)

planum temporale = (Wernicke's area: secondary auditory cortex) for language at the bigger at the left side

Lateralization

morphology of the brain structure:

-the left frontal operculum (Broca's area) is much (more/less) developed (greater arborization) than he right operculum (same area in the right hemisphere).

- the left operculum (Broca's area) is involved in speech/language.

1. in neurological patients

2. during brain stimulation

3. by applying a sodium amobarbital injection

An example to examine lateralization was a neurological patient is a _patient  =These patients underwent a commissurotomy, the bisection of the corpus collosum

_= the information in the left visual field will be processed by the right hemisphere

To name the observed object you need to transmit the visual information to the( left/right) hemisphere, which is the language/speech hemisphere. The latter step (is/is not) possible in patient with a commissurotomy.

_ means that the patient cannot recognize the object whereas the visual system is intact.

Agnosia means that the patient cannot recognize the object whereas the visual system is intact.

Why do patients with a commissurotomy (split-brain) have an agnosia of the right hand?

Agnosia = means that the patient cannot recognize the object whereas the visual system is intact.

Answer: to be able to recognize the object with the right hand, the visual information should be transmitted from the right to the left hemisphere . Why? the left hemisphere directs the right arm/hand (contralateral). So, in patients with a commissurotomy, the information cannot be transferred from the right to the left hemisphere, resulting in an agnosia of the right hand.

In case of _ =

ongoing functions like speech will stop by applying electrical current to that specific speech/language area (hyperpolarization). Electrical current can also provoke activities, such as motor activities (depolarization). The patient may speak, sing or play the violin during surgery!

_ = switches off a complete hemisphere for several minutes. Long Term Memory (LTM) can be tested during that period.
